'Squid Game'
The first show of 'Squid game' started on September 17 on Netflix. After that, the 'Squid game' rose to number one in Netflix's rankings in 90 countries worldwide. The popular game show is now the center of interest for viewers as they find a similarity to the 456 contestants playing in the Squid game.
What is Squid Game?
A mysterious invitation to join a mysterious and deadly survival game is sent to people at risk who are in dire need of money.456 participants from all walks of life are locked into a secret location where they play games in order to win 45.6 billion won (£28 million).Every game is a Korean traditional children's game such as Red Light, Green Light, but the consequence of losing is death.
Who will be the winner, and what is the purpose behind this game?
The interesting visuals of the series show, the similarity of reality with the characters and the way some difficult and painful aspects of human character have emerged have touched the minds of people in different countries of the world.
All the 456 contestants in the Squid game are in debt. They are all desperate to turn around. This game is a battle to live by risking life. Winning the six-game series will bring the winner to 45.6 billion Korean won or $39 million. Death is inevitable if defeated.
Experts say the key to the success of this game series is that most of its characters are marginalized people in society. all of them are facing huge financial problems but they are people from different walks of life.
The story behind The Squid Game dates back to 2008, in which the Korean filmmaker claims to have developed a first script when he was in a bad financial situation and after reading the manga Liar Game. The liars game and Kaiji. However, as he explained in an interview with KoreaTimes, at that first moment he thought that the project was too complex and bizarre and it was not until more than a decade later that he decided to carry it out.
Who Dies in Squid Game?
It might be easier to list who doesn’t die. None of the game’s 456 contestants make it out, save for protagonist Gi-hun and old man contestant Oh Il-nam (more on that later). Ali is tricked by Sang-woo into giving all of his marbles in Round Four, and is killed by the soldiers. Han Mi-ryeo succeeds in her promise to kill gangster Jang Deok-su when she grabs onto him and throws them both off of the glass bridge in Round Five. Kang Sae-byeok, the North Korean woman looking to get back to her brother, is killed by Sang-woo in the lead up to the final round.
Notable deaths in the series conclusion that take place outside the arena include Hwang Joon-ho, the police officer who infiltrates Squid Game pretty damn effectively, only to be killed by the Front Man, aka his own brother. And also Gi-hun’s mother, whom Gi-hun finds dead upon returning to his apartment after winning the game. Presumably, she died from complications to her diabetes, which is shown to be very serious in the second episode.
Who Wins Squid Game?
By the end of the sixth game, protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) emerges victorious.
He squares up with childhood friend-turned-nemesis Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) in a bloody round of squid game and knocks down his opponent.
But, steps before winning, Gi-hun asks to vote on terminating the game, assuming that Sang-woo will side with him and create the necessary majority to end the whole tournament.
But Sang-woo stabs himself in the neck and dies, letting Gi-hun win.
Squid Game is a show that has and will continue to bring fear, tears and thought-provoking discussions among viewers all over the globe. This is a perfect show choice for anyone who is able to handle not only the physical brutality, but the psychologically draining clash of human nature and morality.
The series flips the concept on its head and turns the mirror towards all of us. It genuinely makes you wonder, what would you do?
If you are quarantining or having a night in with a few of your friends, I would recommend giving “Squid Game” a try.
Fair warning though, this is not for the faint of heart.
